Plain-language guides to comfort care

For patients and families. Nothing here replaces advice from your doctor or care team — when in doubt, ask them.

These guides are for general understanding. Always discuss your own care with your medical team.

Therapy explainers

ReikiPending review

A gentle practice where a practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above your body to help you relax deeply. Many people feel calmer, less anxious, and sleep better. You stay fully clothed; you can stop any time.

Qi GongPending review

Slow, gentle movements with breathing and focus — can be done seated. Eases stiffness, supports breathing, and brings a calm, settled feeling. Movements stay at your pace, never to the point of strain.

Yoga (gentle / restorative)Pending review

Supported, gentle postures and breathing, adapted to your body. Releases tension, calms the mind, and can improve sleep. We adapt around fractures, frailty, or recent surgery — always tell us first.

MassagePending review

Gentle, comforting touch with pressure adjusted to you. Relieves muscle tension and pain, lowers anxiety, aids sleep. We avoid wounds, recent surgery, or blood clots — tell us if you bruise or bleed easily.

AcupuncturePending review

A qualified practitioner places very fine needles at specific points. May ease nausea, some pain, and fatigue. Important if you have low platelets, a bleeding disorder, blood thinners, or a weakened immune system — check with your care team first.

Infrared saunaPending review

Gentle warmth from infrared light at a controlled temperature. Soothes aches and stiffness and supports relaxation. Short and supervised. Needs clearance first, especially with heart conditions, low blood pressure, or dizziness.

Meditation & MindfulnessPending review

Guided attention and breathing to settle a busy or anxious mind. Reduces stress and anxiety and can help with sleep. Can be done lying in bed. If quiet focus ever feels distressing, tell us.

Sound & Music therapyPending review

Soothing sound, music, or instruments used to relax and lift mood. Eases anxiety, can ease how pain feels, and supports rest. You listen or take part as much as you like.

Art therapyPending review

Creative expression guided by a trained therapist. A safe way to process feelings, ease distress, and find meaning. No skill needed; the process matters, not the result.

NaturopathyPending review

A natural-health consultation covering diet, lifestyle, and gentle remedies. Supports energy, digestion, and general wellbeing. Herbs and supplements can interact with your medicines — every plan is checked against our interaction review first.

AromatherapyPending review

Gentle, diluted plant essential oils for scent and comfort. Can ease anxiety and nausea and support sleep. Tell us about asthma, allergies, or sensitive skin so we choose safe oils.

Symptom guides

Managing painPending review

Alongside prescribed medicines, gentle therapies — massage, acupuncture, heat, relaxation, mindfulness — can help some people feel more comfortable. Always tell your care team about new or worsening pain.

Easing anxiety & stressPending review

Breathing practices, meditation, gentle movement, Reiki, and sound therapy can bring moments of calm. If anxiety feels overwhelming or constant, tell your care team — support exists.

Sleeping betterPending review

A calmer evening routine, gentle relaxation, and aromatherapy may help. Mention ongoing sleep problems — a treatable cause may be behind them.

Nausea & appetitePending review

Acupuncture, certain scents, and relaxation may ease nausea for some people. Tell your care team about persistent nausea or weight loss — these can often be treated directly.

Fatigue & energyPending review

Gentle movement, balancing rest with small activities, and managing sleep may help. Report sudden or severe fatigue to your care team.

Safety

Are complementary therapies safe with my treatment?

Used well, most are gentle and low-risk. The key is coordination: we discuss every therapy with you and your care team so it fits your medical treatment. They support comfort — they don't replace your medicines.

Herbs & supplements — drug interactionsPending review

This is the biggest safety area. Some herbs change how your medicines work or raise bleeding risk. Never start a herb or supplement without telling your care team. Every herbal plan is checked against our drug–herb interaction review.

When to pause a therapy or call your care team

Pause and tell us if you notice new or worse pain, bleeding or unusual bruising, fever, dizziness or fainting, a skin reaction, breathlessness, or anything that just feels wrong.
